Ductless Mini Splits
Also known simply as a “mini split”, ductless mini splits are a versatile alternative to a central AC or heat pump system. These compact split systems divide their components into two distinct parts: an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor.
The main difference between a traditional HVAC system and a mini split system is that the traditional HVAC is connected through a series of ducts, while mini splits are separate pieces confined to the room or zone you mount them in (hence the “ductless” part of the name).
People tend to use mini splits in their home or business when they want more adaptability for their heating and cooling. They’re often found in room additions, basements or attics, converted garages, and enclosed porches.
Advantages of a Mini Split
- Easier & cleaner installation
- Quieter operation
- Energy efficient heating & cooling
- Better indoor air quality
- Individual control per room/zone
Multi Zone Ductless Mini Splits
While you can just install one mini split to one room or zone that calls for a different temperature than the rest of the premises (such as basement or building extension) a multi zone mini split system is ideal for when you are looking to break up your home or business into several different temperature zones. This may be because of different temperature preferences within your household, uneven heating and cooling distribution issues, new building attachments, lack of space for ducts without serious renovations, etc.
While conventional central duct systems can have multi zone capabilities as well, they are more of a hassle for 3 reasons: they are costly, complicated to install, and vulnerable to structural damage that is even more costly and complicated to repair.
Multi zone mini split systems are made up of one air handler per zone, all paired with just one outdoor compressor unit. Typically, one outdoor compressor unit can be paired up to 8 air handlers. Each zone’s handler is easy to control with their own separate thermostat and remote!
Package Terminal ACs
Often abbreviated a PTAC, Package Terminal ACs are industrial level heating and air conditioning systems that solely use electricity to power themselves. They are designed to heat and cool a single living space, so that different temperature preferences and needs can be accommodated based on the individual tenant. Because of this. PTACs are most commonly found in places like hotels, motels, condos, apartments, hospitals, senior living facilities, add-on rooms, etc.
Many systems are built to heat and cool a room, but some PTACs are cooling-only unit. If your facility is one that does not need extra heating, these cooling-only PTACs can be a cost saving solution.
How Does It Work
- Typically, PTAC units are installed directly into the window wall or masonry wall
- Operating through the wall, vents and heat sinks are both placed inside and outside
- The single living space is now able to accommodate an individual temperature from the rest of the building
Single Zone Mini Splits
Is there one area of your home that gets neglected by your current heating and cooling system (such as a home addition or basement)? Do you have an area of your home that conventional systems might not deliver AC to, but you desperately need it there (such as the garage or an outdoor porch)?
A single zone mini split system may be the answer!
Just like multi-zone ductless mini splits, single zone mini splits consist of an indoor air handler unit and an outdoor compressor unit. Unlike multi-zone, however, since you are only air conditioning one zone, you only need one of each component: one line set, one cable, and one drain line.
Single zone mini splits are also perfect for very small places, such as a small cabin with two, maybe three rooms. A single zone mini split is just the right size to handle even airflow throughout the cabin!
Single zone mini splits can be beneficial to your home for a number of reasons. Neglected airflow areas may cause you to overwork your centralized AC unit to try and heat or cool the area, without effective results. A mini split installed in this zone will allow you to use your energy more efficiently. It can also help you tailor this specific zone to the occupant’s personal temperature preference!
Ductless Heat Pumps
Another alternative to centralized air systems are ductless heat pumps! This system is a kind of mini split that produces heat by reversing the flow of refrigerant liquid back and forth between the outdoor and indoor units, transferring the heat through a constant cycle of evaporation and condensation.
Ductless heat pumps give you the same kind of adaptability of regular mini splits, available in single or multi zone systems. They also come with the benefit of being an all-in-one system, helping you cool your home as well as heat it, simply by reversing the system.
Here are some other benefits:
- They are good for homes that need additional heating in a particular area or have no room to add ductwork
- They are more energy efficient (often saving you 20-30% of energy usage)
- Easier to install than centralized systems with more installation choices (on the wall, ceiling, or floor)
- Customizable temperatures for each zone installed with individual thermostats
- Longevity, lasting 15-20 years
